Dr Alison Ashworth
GP Partner

MBBS, MRCGP, BSc, DRCOG, DFRSH.

Dr Ashworth qualified from St. George’s Hospital Medical School University of London in 2000. She always wanted to be a GP so did her specialist training in and around Winchester and became a GP in 2006. Dr Ashworth has been a Partner with The Portchester Practice since 2010. In addition to her work as a GP she is a Clinical Advisor for NHS England South East region working with the complaints team and professional standards team.

Outside of work she enjoys running, cycling and gym classes. She also loves cooking and family holidays!

Dr Bryony Sales
GP Partner

MBBS, BSc, MRCGP, DRFSH. MAMedEd

Dr Sales qualified from Imperial College London in 2008. She completed her GP training in Portsmouth. Dr Sales joined the practice in 2015 as a GP Partner. She has an interest in the training and assessment of doctors and medical students, and is a member of a national group that develops assessment of doctors training to be GPs in their workplace. Dr Sales is a GP trainer in the practice. When not in the GP practice, Dr Sales enjoys keeping fit and all aspects of living in and exploring Hampshire. Dr Sales is available on Mondays, alternate Tuesdays, and Fridays.

Dr Aaron Lawrie
GP Partner

BMBS MRCGP. Qualified in Brighton in 2011.

Dr Lawrie qualified from Brighton and Sussex Medical School in 2011. He completed his GP training in Portsmouth in 2016, joining The Portchester Practice as a partner in 2017. He has an interest in medical education and is a GP trainer in the Practice. Dr Lawrie is available Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays

Dr James Perry
GP Partner

MBChB, BSc (Hons), MRCGP, DROG

Dr Perry qualified in 2008 from the University of Birmingham Medical School. He worked as a Medical Officer in the Royal Navy for several years before returning to work for the NHS in 2014. Dr Perry qualified as a GP in Portsmouth in 2017 and joined The Portchester Practice before moving to New Zealand in 2018, returning to the UK and The Portchester Practice in 2021. Dr Perry is qualified to administer joint injections. Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his family and enjoys the outdoors, either mountain biking or getting out on the Solent. Dr Perry is available Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Dr Owens qualified from University of Southampton medical school in 2012. She completed her GP training in Portsmouth and Fareham. Dr Owens joined the practice as a salaried GP in 2019 Dr Owens is available Mondays and Wednesdays.

Dr Helen Buckby qualified from Southampton Medical School in 2003 and completed her GP training in Portsmouth in 2010. She worked in a Portsmouth surgery for 10 years before joining the Portchester Practice as a retained GP in 2020. Outside work Dr Buckby enjoys spending time with the family and photography. Dr Buckby is available on Tuesdays & Thursdays.

Nursing Team

Practice nurses are qualified and registered nurses. They can help with health issues such as family planning, healthy living advice, blood pressure checks and dressings. The practice nurses run clinics for long-term health conditions such as asthma or diabetes, minor ailment clinics and carry out cervical smears.

Healthcare assistants support practice nurses with their daily work and carry out tasks such as phlebotomy (drawing blood), blood pressure measurement and new patient checks. They may act as a chaperone when a patient or doctor requests one.

Practice Team

The practice manager is involved in managing all of the business aspects of the practice such as making sure that the right systems are in place to provide a high quality of patient care, human resources, finance, patient safety, premises and equipment and information technology. The practice manager supports the GPs and other medical professionals with delivering patient services and also helps to develop extended services to enhance patient care.

Reception

Receptionists provide an important link for patients with the practice and are your initial contact point for general enquiries. They can provide basic information on services and results and direct you to the right person depending on your health issue or query. Receptionists make most of the patient appointments with the GPs and nurses. They also perform other important tasks such as issuing repeat prescriptions and dealing with prescription enquiries, dealing with financial claims, dealing with patient records and carrying out searches and practice audits.

 Community Midwives

They visit pregnant patients at home and carry out antenatal clinics at the practice in association with the Doctors. They also attend you after birth and they arrange parent craft classes, which are held at Fareham Community Hospital. Contact number: 01489 587444

 Community Nurses

The Patient Support Team (former District Nurses) visit patients confined to their homes. The team have experience in terminal care, wound care and continence, and you may contact them directly if you feel that you require their services on 023 9232 4166.

Primary Care Network (PCN) Team

The Fareham & Portchester PCN is a collaboration between four independent practices. We work together to deliver additional healthcare services within the PCN patient population, whilst maintaining the individual identity of each member Practice. Our vision is to have a PCN that supplements and assists with the daily workload of primary care. The additional services aim to improve patient safety and quality of care, leading to sustainable and beneficial mechanism of healthcare delivery.

If the MSK believes the patient requires physiotherapy as an ongoing treatment, then they will be referred into the community outpatient’s physiotherapy service. Also if they require rheumatology, X-rays, blood test, medications, domiciliary physio etc. all appropriate signposting and referrals will be completed.
